Supreme Commander
The inheritor of the Total Annihilation RTS, Supreme Commander, being made by Gas Powered Games will apparently be coming to us in 2007. A good preview can be found here at Gamespot.
The storyline, like that of Total Annihilation, leaves much to be desired. We have three races which is pretty standard now days; the UEF or United Earth Federation, the Cybran and the Aeon. An easy way to differentiate the races would be to think of it like this; normal humans, humans with metal bits and humans with probes or…something.
I’m guessing this race/storyline issue won’t really matter id the game they deliver is great as this sort of game tend not to rely heavily on their storylines (notable exceptions, among others, being Warcraft).
The game itself sounds great and will feature many new innovations. The maps will be colossal and will allow multiple battles to take place at one time. Your unit A.I. will be much better, removing the need to closely shepherd your units as in other RTS games and this will take the formation, among other things, of; units not converging on a single point you click on, but doing sweeps in the specific area to make for better coverage of your army; the ability to have transport units load and offload units with ease and actually go back for more.
Screenshots reveal quite a bit: Units will not have one weakness and strength like most rock, paper, scissors RTS formula but will be useful for many types of engagement (I did always thing it odd that one rifleman could survive several barrages from rocket infantry) and this will be particularly the case of the super units, like this giant spider thingy here.
Bases seem to follow the Total Annihilation format with mass collectors rather than metal collectors and energy generators as seen here.
Battles seem to involve air and naval units just as frequently, as seen here.
So, we will have to wait till 2007 but so far it looks worth the wait.
Alskreek, out.
