John Woo’s Stranglehold is a third person action shooter, resembling a Hong Kong action flick which is not surprising considering director John Woo’s involvement. Developed by Midway, Stranglehold is the spiritual successor to the movie Hard Boiled.
In Stranglehold you play experienced cop Tequila, played and voiced by Chow Yun Fat, who is determined to rid Hong Kong of a network of powerful crime syndicates.
The real draw of the game lies in the interactive cinema style approach, with wholesale destruction and crazy acrobatics being commonplace. Virtually anything in the levels will be destructible; from the bottles on a bar top, the watermelons in a kitchen and the rotting walls of Hong Kong shanty towns. This will create an environment that changes throughout a level, for example cover will be of short supply as it will disappear under heavy fire, thus a player will need to keep moving to find more.
The player will be able to pull off various acrobatic maneuvers, many that interact with the environment around the player. Tequila can run down railings, slide across benches and tables, swing from lanterns and so on. Many of these acrobatic maneuvers will put the player into a slow-motion mode, similar to Max Payne’s bullet time, which has been called ‘Tequila Time’. Once in slow-mo a player will move at normal speed while all enemies will move much slower and tricky shots will be much easier to pull off, earning the player style points which can be used to pull off special moves. ‘Tequila Time’ will also be available as a manually activated skill with a timer counter to limit its use.
Stranglehold will be available in Xbox 360, PS3 and PC formats and there will be no differences between the three versions.
Fingers crossed, Stranglehold is due to be released in 2007. For more information you can go here.
