From Will Wright, the maker of the Sims, and EA comes the evolutionary civilization game Spore. This very unique game will combine RTS, RPG, Civilization and Sims style play into a conglomeration and will put a races evolutionary progress into your hands. Two main things make this game stand out, the unique style and progression of play and the ability to customize everything.
Spore will start you out as a tiny single celled organism in the sea and will then progress as you fight for survival and evolve becoming a sea creature and eventually crawling onto land; this is called the tide pool phase. There are many ways to accomplish this as the game lets you achieve your goals socially, by force or by culture; your choice of omnivore, carnivore or herbivore is just one example. After crawling onto the land you must hunt with your creature and develop ties with others of your kind while interacting with other creatures of varying species; this is called the creature phase. After this you will progress to the tribal phase, the game will take on a civilization/rts style play as you create cities and upgrade your creatures abilities and technology this will then progress into the city phase as your technologies become more advanced. The civilization phase gives you the goal of conquering your planet through peace and diplomacy or through war. Once you have conquered your planet you progress to the space phase where your flying saucer is your main tool that you use to fly around the galaxy, completing missions, attacking other great civilizations, terra forming, entering into diplomatic relations and so on. All of this is within a freeform format in that you can choose to achieve these goals a number of ways, or, conceivably do your own thing, randomly throwing chunks of ice at planets is one example.
The ability to customize almost everything is, in my opinion, what makes this game shine. Right from the start when you design your creature you are given hundreds of different options, many which effect how your creature will play in the game. Various arms, legs, hands, feet, eyes mouths and so on can be attached to your creature and then manipulated further just as your base torso/blob and spine can be manipulated. After this phase of creation is over you can add different colours and textures to your creature with a base and several highlights available. As you progress through the game you will be able to manipulate the way your creature looks as it evolves adding new limbs or changing old ones to further advantage your creature/s. When the tribal level and beyond is reached you will be able to customize the way your houses look, the way the flora appears in game, the various vehicles that your races uses, the way your flying saucer looks and so on. Another way in which Spore lets you customize your environment is with the flying saucer. With your saucer you will be able to terra form planets by raising or lowering water levels on planets with ice from space, level planets and start anew, capture various life forms and add their genetic material to your own or deposit them on a planet you have terra formed to watch them evolve.
Spore looks to be a very promising game though as of yet there is no release date. For more info you can go to the official site and gamespot has some good videos.
