Resistance 2
Playstation 3
$109.95
10/10
When the Playstation 3 hit store shelves on 17 November last year, the pick of the mostly mediocre launch titles was clear.
Resistance: Fall of Man, a meaty first-person shooter developed by Insomniac was an instant classic and still represents great value in the PS3 platinum title bargain bin at $49.95.
It was always going to be hard work for Insomniac to raise the bar with the sequel, but Resistance 2 delivers much more than its polished predecessor.
Set in post World War II United States, Resistance 2 takes gamers on a path of alternate history, where an alien invasion of America makes Hitler's rule over Germany look like child's play.
The Chimera, the alien species that destroyed Europe and Britain in the first instalment, has spread to the USA and humanity's hopes of survival are slim.
You play as Sgt Nathan Hale and use an arsenal of impressive and innovative weapons to blast your way through the alien stronghold.
The visuals are as jaw-dropping as the game play. Seeing American cities like Chicago and Idaho Falls crumble and burn is impressive and watching the action unfold in crisp 1080p high-definition is even better.
Most memorable are the swarm moments, when tens, or sometimes hundreds of half-cooked aliens rush your vulnerable squad.
The multiplayer is the best I've ever played. Online co-op style play for up to eight players has no equivalent and is an immersing and rewarding experience.
The single player campaign is top-notch, but will only last eight or 10 hours. When that's done, be prepared to sink countless hours into the multiplayer mode battling aliens with the rest of the world.
With Grand Theft Auto IV, Midnight Club: Los Angeles and LittleBigPlanet still fresh in my mind; Resistance 2 is a cut-above and clearly my favourite game of 2008.
