What do you get when you fuse the vast city space of Grand Theft Auto IV and the freedom of Assassin's Creed with the iconic comic-book visuals of a Marvel production?
inFAMOUS - a post-apocalyptic adventure that delivers more shocks than putting your tongue on a car battery.
It's a thrilling story that has it all; regular guy suddenly develops super human powers in a modern New York City-like environment, plenty of bad guys and an impending disaster.
Here's the lowdown:
Cole MacGrath, a bike messenger, urban explorer and everyday ordinary guy, sets out to deliver a package in the downtown area of Empire City.
Present at the scene of a devastating explosion that rocks Empire City, he barely manages to survive the event. As riots erupt in the aftermath, the city collapses into chaos and becomes overrun by powerful criminals.
The city is quarantined from the mainland, and television broadcasts link Cole to the scene of the crime. Cole is now a wanted man, but he's also wielding extraordinary powers as a result of the explosion.
The first step on your adventure, and one of the most enjoyable, is learning to harness Cole's powers. He has become a human-taser and can shoot bolts of electricity to kill enemies and destroy his surrounds.
At almost every stage of the game, you will be faced with simple moral choices that result in complex outcomes.
Do the right thing and become a good superhero, or make the evil choices and only look out for yourself. For example, early on in the story, you can either kill civilians and keep an entire food air drop to yourself, or be good and share it around - but be forced to find more food to stay healthy.
Depending on your choices, the game has a number of different paths for Cole to take. It's your call.
If you're a PlayStation Trophy collector be prepared to complete the 15-hour single player campaign twice, one with good intentions the other as evil as can be.
Missions are GTA-style, the free running and jumping is better than Assassin's Creed and the graphic novel style cut scenes seem straight from the pages of a Marvel comic.
It's a combination that will ensure your jaw is agape regularly throughout the game.
The sound is amazing, and takes leaps and bounds when played through a 5.1 channel system. When Cole is tense, or an event is about to unfold, the music and ambience intensifies on cue, and eases off when all is swell.
Every building in the three island city is climbable and just free-running through the city, scaling large structures and pulling off death-defying jumps is so much fun.
When it comes to complaints, the occasional graphic pop-up and slow down in frame rate is not enough to spoil the inFAMOUS party.
inFAMOUS is an impressive PS3 project and a promising sign of the console's continuing commitment to outside-the-square concepts.
For those without a Playstation 3, Sony Australia is currently bundling inFAMOUS with its famously sexy black box.
