Gears of War
Gears of war, a gritty sci-fi/horror third person shooter, has been available for play at this years E3. I agree with Tycho from Penny Arcade in that this game could very-well be of halo-esque stature, perhaps without the annoying non-endings (hint, Halo 2), and I think this is specifically true due to the fact that the game will have full co-op multiplayer – something which is defiantly the way to go.
The game is set on the world of Sera where humans are, yet again, warring over energy sources. While this is going on a darker forces are gathering in the earth below and on a certain day, thereafter known as Emergence Day, this force erupted from the earth to overwhelm humanity. This force is called the Locust; a race of nightmarish creatures that wield technologies comparable to the humans. Needless to say the humans get creamed and retreat to Jacinto Plateau, a geological region of solid granite that Locust diggers cannot get through. From this fortress city the humans decimated their cities with various mass-destruction weapons rather than have the Locust take them – along with civilians that where not evacuated. The games protagonist is one Marcus Fenix, a hardened veteran of the wars before Emergence Day.
On the game play side there are several things to note. It’s a third person shooter, so the camera looks over the characters shoulder. Context sensitive controls play a big role in terms of using cover; in all the trailers I have seen, cover has been used extensively and seems to be a main feature of getting through the game alive. Rather than just crouching or going prone you can actually push against cover in various ways, similar to the way you do this in splinter cell, you can either quickly pop up to fire or fire wildly over the edge without looking.
The environment features fairly destructive environments, one obviously can’t tell until the finished product as I’ll wager some of the destruction is pre-scripted. Weapons seem fairly standard but entertaining: an assault/machine gun; a shotgun; a whirly grenade that the character swings around on a cord; the machine gun features a saw-blade mount which, in one of the movies I have seen, can be used melee style to saw through your enemies. Apparently the game has a team based focus and does not reward Rambo style play.
