Dead Rising
Dead Rising, a zombie oriented third person shooter, will be hitting stores in America in the next month and, unfortunately, not coming to Australia till September.
The game takes place in the small town of Willamette where intrepid freelance photo journalist Frank West, the character you play, comes to chase down a lead that will hopefully be a big scoop. The town has been mysteriously cordoned off by the military and police forces and so you enter the town via helicopter. During this insertion period you get a glimpse of the horrors that have been unleashed on the town, with your handy camera in hand you can rack up some easy points with pictures from this safe vantage point before you even get on the ground. Once on the ground most of the game takes place in and around the large shopping mall of Willamette which, predictably enough, is filled with zombies, crazies and survivors.
The game will have a time limit of a few days before the military arrive and you are rescued. Within that time limit you will be able to do many things such as completing the main quests of the game and unveiling more about what really went on in this town. Side quest will be available that will give you various bonuses, most important of all they will provide you with excellent opportunities for photo snaps. Many quests and events will be time based and so will only happen at certain periods or be available for completion within a certain time frame. I think it is safe to say that at night things are going to get a little hairier and things will probably get worse as the days progress.
The experience system that gives Frank new moves, more health and so on is based on either taking photos that garner maximum points or by completing side quests and killing lots of zombies. The picture taking works on how dramatic the scene you are capturing is and how many things are happening in the picture. The example that has been given of this includes taking a picture of a many on top of a car waving at you while zombies surround him, this would garner a nice amount of points but so to would a picture of that same man fending of the zombies or being eaten alive by them.
Many unlockable features will be available for those dedicated enough to find them such as being able to spend an indefinite time in the mall.
