Dawn of War: Dark Crusade Demo

The demo for Dawn of War: Dark Crusade is now available for download and the full version will be released in October.

The demo allows you to play 3 games: a tutorial; a skirmish with a space marine enemy and a small segment of campaign. Out of all of these the skirmish is perhaps the most entertaining as the tutorial constantly bleats information at you and the campaign game, annoyingly enough, ends before you get to assault the space marine monastery.

Of the two new races available in the full game the demo allows you to play one, the Tau. Most of the Tau units are accessible to the player, exceptions only being high tier level units. The Tau are gorgeously rendered and it is a joy to see them translated from miniature form, particularly the battle suits which stomp and fly around the battlefield with an aura of power about them. Tau weaponry fire also looks quite spectacular and is equally as deadly with even the most basic unit having powerful energy weapons. The Tau build in a similar fashion to all the other races and very little time is needed for a player to get used to playing them. What is different about the way in which the Tau build chart functions is the two divergent paths that can be taken; one emphasises long ranged fire power, unlocking the hammer head gunship among other things; the other emphasises the use of kroot in conjunction with your other units and allows the krootox to be unlocked.

In terms of the full version game it seems that the campaign mode will function as an actual campaign rather than a progressive story. The player will be able to choose any one of the 7 playable races in the campaign with the goal of conquering the planet.

Alskreek, out.
