Company of Heroes

Relic seem to be the new real time strategy masters as their new game, Company of Heroes, seems to attest. One can actually look past the fact that it is a WWII game because of how good it is, in fact very little seems to be wrong with the title.

The core gameplay is similar to Relic’s previous title, Dawn of War, with a whole lot of depth added in. The key resource points around the map have been divided into three types; ones that deal with manpower and unit caps, ones that provide fuel for building and for vehicles, and ones for ammunition which govern unit special abilities and armament. These resource points must be linked to your HQ zone via area control and so sections of the map in between these points become just as important and provide an extra tactical nuance. Coupled with this resource management are a variety of command trees that one can progress through to unlock special abilities such as artillery strikes, unit drops and offensive and defensive bonuses.

Gameplay focuses on tactical, company scale combat and all units are very versatile in what they can do. Infantry are able to clamber around all sorts of terrain which means one will be using them for the entire game alongside more specialised supporting units. Other supporting units consits of light and heavy armour, artillery and defensive units and it pays to have a healthy balance of all of them. The thing that really sets Company of Heroes apart from previous rts games is the fact that all terrain is full destructable, and, in addition to this units will take advantage of terrain as it is destroyed, infantry being the prime example. Maps become drastically altered as games progress and idilic french villages will become heaps of rubble by the end of a game.

If you like rts style games then this is one of the best, for more information here is the ay=21&year=1985" target="_blank">official site.

Alskreek, out.
