I LOVE VIDZONE
It's a line of lust I'm regularly reading in forums across the Internet. Sony's music streaming and video playing jukebox will revolutionise home parties across the planet.
Here's five reasons why Computer Game's Glen Atwell loves VidZone:
5. So many songs, I don't know where to start.
VidZone launched with 10,000 tracks, if you played them back-to-back 24/7, it would take three weeks to churn through. Any music video system must launch with a comprehensive catalogue and VidZone ticks all the boxes. From The Police to Paul Potts to MJ to Eminem - it's all on there.
4. Sleek interface, so you can spin me right round baby, right round.
This is VidZone 1.01 - yet the player looks sleek and works incredibly well. With a Playstation Network look and feel, it connects quickly and glides through the menu functions. There is a couple of improvements needed, the like ability to scroll up to quickly get to the bottom of the playlists, but I'm sure a heap of fixes are in the works.
The select button alters the screen between thumbnail and full screen during music playback, it's fast and works without fuss.
3. Unobtrusive advertising.
The small advertising boxes are cute and user-friendly. Sony has hit the nail on the head with this. They pop up intermittently during music playback, but only run alongside the song information, so it's a sidebar to something useful.
The content is mostly game-related, and fits in with what gamers would want to click on, if they choose to. For a free service of this class, Sony could have gone with bigger, meaner adverts - they exercised a classy amount of restraint here.
2. Create your own playlists, hold your own pumping party.
Create playlist, add songs, send invites, party. If you're lucky enough to have your Playstation 3 hooked up to a cranking sound system, VidZone will be your rebirth. I created a 20-song, party tune playlist in a matter of minutes. The system just works.
If you can't be miffed making your own, run a recommended playlist put together by a wage-earning big-wig at PS3 HQ - who cares - it's free music.
VidZone may put a few mobile party DJs out of business, poor Moby Disc must be ruing this system, but for the masses it's another free cog in the PS3s always growing engine.
1. It's free. FREE. FREE. FREE. FREE. VidZone is FREE.
If Sony wanted to charge me $30 a year to access VidZone, I'd hand over $50 and say keep the change.
But no, VidZone is free. Just download the app from the PSN Store and you're up and running in minutes, keeping your credit card safely tucked in your wallet.
VidZone will stream the latest releases in top-notch video and music quality. OK, so the audio is not CD quality, but it will do. It's FREE!
Sony has hit another home-run here. Stay tuned to Computer Game in the coming days to read what we think VidZone could be doing better.
