Assassins Creed

One of the most interesting and exciting games in development at the moment is Assassins Creed. It is also a game that the developers have said very, very little about.

Battlefield 2142 Demo

The Battlefield 2142 Multiplayer demo is out a few days before release of the actual game and if you didn't pre-order through EA (like most sane people) it is available for everyone else now. Here's a link, i'm not sure what to think of it yet.

Company of Heroes

Relic seem to be the new real time strategy masters as their new game, Company of Heroes, seems to attest. One can actually look past the fact that it is a WWII game because of how good it is, in fact very little seems to be wrong with the title.

The core gameplay is similar to Relic’s previous title, Dawn of War, with a whole lot of depth added in. The key resource points around the map have been divided into three types; ones that deal with manpower and unit caps, ones that provide fuel for building and for vehicles, and ones for ammunition which govern unit special abilities and armament. These resource points must be linked to your HQ zone via area control and so sections of the map in between these points become just as important and provide an extra tactical nuance. Coupled with this resource management are a variety of command trees that one can progress through to unlock special abilities such as artillery strikes, unit drops and offensive and defensive bonuses.

Defcon

Defcon by Introversion is a very unique real time strategy which puts you in the chair of a military commander in control of the escalation to thermonuclear warfare. The goal of the game is, basically, to lose the least.

The main view in defcon is of a simple world map with only the major population centers visible. You take control of an area of the map; Russia, Europe, Asia, South or North America. The game puts you through each defcon level from 5 to 1 and can be done in real time. As you progress through each stage hostilities with other countries will become available on an increasing scale eventually allowing you to launch nukes from your silos at defcon 1. The units you control in the game consist of fleets, airfields, nuke silos and radar stations: fleets are made up of subs which can launch medium range nukes, carriers which can launch bombers and fighters and battleships which can attack other fleets; airfields act as carriers on land with a larger range and are able to launch bombers and fighters; nuke silos start in air defense mode and can be switched into nuke launching mode once defcon 1 has been reached, silos have the longest range and hardest hitting variety of nukes; finally, radars give you a radius within which you can detect enemy attacks.
