Spore

From Will Wright, the maker of the Sims, and EA comes the evolutionary civilization game Spore. This very unique game will combine RTS, RPG, Civilization and Sims style play into a conglomeration and will put a races evolutionary progress into your hands. Two main things make this game stand out, the unique style and progression of play and the ability to customize everything.

Spore will start you out as a tiny single celled organism in the sea and will then progress as you fight for survival and evolve becoming a sea creature and eventually crawling onto land; this is called the tide pool phase. There are many ways to accomplish this as the game lets you achieve your goals socially, by force or by culture; your choice of omnivore, carnivore or herbivore is just one example. After crawling onto the land you must hunt with your creature and develop ties with others of your kind while interacting with other creatures of varying species; this is called the creature phase. After this you will progress to the tribal phase, the game will take on a civilization/rts style play as you create cities and upgrade your creatures abilities and technology this will then progress into the city phase as your technologies become more advanced. The civilization phase gives you the goal of conquering your planet through peace and diplomacy or through war. Once you have conquered your planet you progress to the space phase where your flying saucer is your main tool that you use to fly around the galaxy, completing missions, attacking other great civilizations, terra forming, entering into diplomatic relations and so on. All of this is within a freeform format in that you can choose to achieve these goals a number of ways, or, conceivably do your own thing, randomly throwing chunks of ice at planets is one example.

Mako Powers PS3

Why will Sony's PS3 be in such limited qualities at launch when compared to Nintendo's WII and the several million units available for its launch? I put this question to a friend and here is the answer.

The Wii is made of clouds and sunshine, which are both readily available

Stranglehold

John Woo’s Stranglehold is a third person action shooter, resembling a Hong Kong action flick which is not surprising considering director John Woo’s involvement. Developed by Midway, Stranglehold is the spiritual successor to the movie Hard Boiled.

In Stranglehold you play experienced cop Tequila, played and voiced by Chow Yun Fat, who is determined to rid Hong Kong of a network of powerful crime syndicates.

Dawn of War: Dark Crusade Demo

The demo for Dawn of War: Dark Crusade is now available for download and the full version will be released in October.

The demo allows you to play 3 games: a tutorial; a skirmish with a space marine enemy and a small segment of campaign. Out of all of these the skirmish is perhaps the most entertaining as the tutorial constantly bleats information at you and the campaign game, annoyingly enough, ends before you get to assault the space marine monastery.

The Burning Crusade expansion for World of Warcraft grows ever closer and Blizzard has recently released more information on what the expansion will offer to players.

Oblivion Plugins

The Elder Scrolls III: Oblivion has been out for a number of months now and in that time several new plugins have been released for the game. These plugins add many new features to the game, several of which are tailored to a specific class of character. Many of these plugins are a worthwhile addition to your adventuring, especially if you have found yourself running out of things to do or if you want to play the game through in a different way. They do however come at a price, which is questionable considering all the Morrowind plugins were released for free. So, let’s take a look at what is on offer.

Freelancer

Freelancer is certainly not a new game but it is most defiantly a good one, especially in a multiplayer context.

Freelancer is a third person science fiction, open-ended role-playing game. Your character is a space pilot and consequently almost all of the action in the game takes place in space. This sounds fairly generic now that X1 through 3 and other more recent titles have come out as they are all open-ended role-playing games with a similar premise, but what sets Freelancer apart is its open-endedness combined with the ability for multiplayer, something which the other games do not have. What this open-ended feature means is that you can go anywhere in the game’s known galaxies, trade, take on law enforcement missions and bounty hunter contracts, decide to take up piracy or mining and so on. This, combined with multiplayer aspects, allow you to bring a friend, or friends along with you or even to interact with large groups of people online.
